PH is a measure of active acidity or alkalinity of solutions as contrasted with the titratable acidity or alkalinity. The pH value of a sample solution is determined by measuring the potential difference between two immersed electrodes. Test results provide a preliminary indication of whether a sample is likely to produce acidic drainage. These tests do not, however, provide any data regarding when acidification may occur or the rates at which acid generation and neutralization reactions will ensue.
